FOR MAAT Brussels – Kristína Mičová

GRANDPA, 2012, photography

Kristína Mičová (1994, Trenčín) studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica and at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. Her work spans a wide range of media—including photography, drawing, text, video, and installation. She explores themes related to the experience of landscape and the phenomenon of time. She has held several solo and group exhibitions both in Slovakia and abroad. In 2022, she collaborated with writer Ján Púček on the book Karpaty!, which features her drawings and photographs.

The artist describes her work as follows:

“A pair of photographs captures fragments of my grandfather, sitting at the kitchen table and solving a crossword puzzle in his favorite knitted sweater. The soft light that shaped his presence at that moment became definitive proof that he was there. Everything I capture now will eventually fade, disappear, be lost. I photograph for the sake of forgetting, with the fear that what I see today will no longer be here tomorrow. A photograph is a distorted fragment of my own memory. It becomes the final owner of our recollection.”

The Street Gallery FOR MAAT Brussels is realized in cooperation with the Embassy of the Slovak Republic in Brussels, the Trenčín-based platform FOR MAAT, and Trenčín 2026 – European Capital of Culture.

The project partner is BRIGHT.
